“The fact that no fire has broken out in an industrial plant for decades does not prove that there is no danger in this respect, but represents a stroke of luck for those affected, the end of which must be expected at any time.” This was stated in a ruling by the OVG Lüneburg on Sept. 23, 1976.

Fires cause billions in damage in Germany every year. Production and storage areas in which high-calorific materials (e.g. plastics, rubber, etc.) are handled pose a particular risk.

A rapid spread of fire is to be expected with these products. The spread of fire is significantly accelerated by the spread of fires and embers via conveyor belts to other production areas. T&B water spray extinguishing systems – a combination of fire detection and water extinguishing systems – are used for such risks.

Fire detection

Depending on the local conditions and the existing fire load, fire detection is usually carried out using flame, smoke or heat detectors. Both electrical and pneumatic heat detectors can be used. The triggering temperature should be approx. 30 °C above the maximum ambient temperature in order to avoid false alarms. The maximum monitoring area per detector is always determined in accordance with VdS Guideline 2095.

Water spray extinguishing systems in combination with the above-mentioned detection systems detect a fire particularly quickly and distribute the water simultaneously over all nozzles belonging to an extinguishing area. In this way, the burning material is cooled down and the heat is extracted from the surrounding air. In this way, fires can be fought quickly and safely even in critical areas and the spread of fire can be prevented.

In addition, a water spray extinguishing system can always be triggered manually.

Water spray extinguishing systems with electrical activation can be closed at an early stage in order to quickly stop the water discharge after successful extinguishing.

The required extinguishing water rate is adapted to the respective protected object in accordance with VdS guideline VdS 2109. A range of extinguishing nozzles are available for a wide variety of applications:

Water spray extinguishing systems are installed both for object protection and for room protection. While the extinguishing nozzles in object protection systems are aimed directly at the object to be protected, in room protection systems they are evenly distributed throughout the area to be protected. The protected area can be divided into different extinguishing zones so that sequential extinguishing takes place.

Room protection / property protection

The parts of the building or objects to be protected are equipped with a network of pipes with open extinguishing nozzles, which are divided into several extinguishing zones. In standby mode, the extinguishing water is available up to the water spray valve stations. Fire detection is adjusted to the risk and environment by means of electrical or pneumatic triggering elements.

Water is supplied via a storage tank and a powerful pump.
As soon as the fire detection system detects a fire in the protected area, the corresponding water spray valve station is activated and opened. The extinguishing water only exits via the nozzles in the extinguishing area, absorbs the heat of combustion and cools the burning material.

The water spray extinguishing system is ready for use again immediately after the fire has been extinguished.

The installation of water spray extinguishing systems protects your company from the existentially threatening consequences of a fire, in particular from a lengthy interruption to operations.

In addition to the installation of a water spray extinguishing system, T&B offers you the installation of spark extinguishing systems to protect transport lines and filters against dust explosions and the installation of gas extinguishing systems for object protection (e.g. for processing machines).

We would be happy to develop a customized protection concept for you. With a well thought-out fire protection concept, you signal reliability and safety to your customers.

Room protection is required in combined production and storage areas, for example

Object protection is installed on separate processing machines where fire flashover to other areas is to be prevented.
